Stuy Town to Dogs - You Dropped a Bomb on Me, Baby

When Stuyvesant Town residents aren't slipping on icy walkways, they are slipping on large piles of brown left behind by inconsiderate dog owners. A Stuy Spy took this photo today of a garbage can surrounded by dog feces.

When the Tishman Speyer regime took over the property, they did away with the "no dogs" policy that had been in effect since the '40s. Unfortunately they did little to nothing to prevent the place from drowning in dog urine and mini-loafs ala Gramercy Park. This means anyone with a dog, both residents and non-residents, can use the property as a pooch potty.

While some dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs, there are plenty of others who let their dogs yo-yo into what's left of the landscaping - on their illegal retractable leashes - to drop a bomb. Hopefully the new management will do something about this mess.

I feel sorry for whoever has to clean that shit* up!
I like the baggie that is hanging over the edge - it looks like it is trying to get away from the other bags of poo.

*pun intended

Robbie should really learn to clean-up after his goats.

It's nasty! I walked my dog through the Oval today and counted 3 different piles of shit. There is NO excuse for it. Then I get dirty looks from people walking by and I always pick up after my dog.

I also agree. Where can we complain? it's really disgusting here with people not picking up after their dogs. ????? SO FED UP

When the new management takes over we should start calling the office about it. If they started ticketing / fining people it would stop pretty quick. The trick is finding security officers who aren't 400 pounds and move at a glacial pace.

My daughter and her friend were in the playground off of the oval and she managed to get dog poo on her pants. It's everywhere.

Not all the fecal matter around here is canine, which is 1,000 creepier IMHO.

Nite!

Tishman has purposely overlooked this issue and allowed it to become very bad.

As citizens, we have the right to contact the Health Department and the Sanitation Department to demand enforcement. I think a little outside pressure on the management office would be good.

I totally agree with 447 that everyone should raise hell about this with Rose, and the TA should be involved as well. Leave your complaints on the TA message line 1 (866) 290-9036 so they know a lot of people are upset about this.

I had 2 piles of dog shit outside my building within 2 days, and constantly see it scattered EVERYWHERE in the gardens, on the sidewalks but strangely enough NEVER in the street !

BTW, you can file complaints with the Department Of Health and Mental Hygiene by calling 311.

There's a Sanitation contact at NYC.gov as well.

And you've done a poo inspection?

This is the NYT obit for Fran Lee, whose work led to the pooper scooper law.

Here's a relevant paragraph:
"At the behest of a New York doctor, Ms. Lee took up the cause of dog waste. In the early '70s she founded Children Before Dogs, a group whose aim was the elimination of all such waste from city streets. As she explained often in interviews, Toxocara canis, a tiny roundworm found in dog feces, poses health risks, especially to children. At its most severe, it can cause blindness."

She was a colorful character.

Lovely disturbance tonight. Drunk chick laying on her back in the hall trying to kick a door in. Why? Who knows, she doesn't LIVE here. Hmmm...could she be the apartment with the router I see called "Metro Party Girls NY"?

Actually, my guess is that these poop bags were once in the garbage can. No one ever empties them so the strong winds from the storm probably blew them out onto the grounds. I don't think the fault is that of the dog owners, but of maintenance cuts. Why would dog owners pick up and bag the poop just to throw it back on the ground? I agree otherwise that dog poop is a problem and do my part to pick up after my pooch, however in this situation the blame lies elsewhere.

As a dog owner living in Sty-town I can tell you myself and fellow neighbors over the age of 25 clean up. I see the same dogs day after day and you know your neighbors who are curbing their dogs. I do see the young girl across from us not bother, in fact she seems to take pleasure in letting her dog crap right by the door and head back in, cigarette in hand.

The inconsiderate people are those who come in simply to use the grounds as a toilet. Oddly, security seems to delight in being unpleasant to residents while ignoring the passing thru group.

I will also note, our carriage room looks quite similar, full of shit and overflowing!

Actually the poops in the blue bags were quite substantial so I don't think they were blown out of the garbage from the wind.
More than likely the owner was wearing flip flops and couldn't negotiate the snow.

One a side note I have seen five people in the last two days walking their dogs off the leash? WTF?

Management all too happy to accommodate dormers under 22 and if you've noticed, they do nothing about the loud, drunken parties in our hallways.

Did you say anything to the people who had their dogs off the leash? We all need to speak up instead of fuming inwardly and complaining here.

I saw one woman, who had small children with her, ask a man to put his dog on a leash and he ignored her.
It is not my place to enforce the rules (law?) and you never know how someone is going to react - so I will not confront anyone, and I wouldn't suggest anyone else do so either. They know what they are doing is wrong.

By the time you call security they've passed. They are the one who need to be visible and enforce the rules. I rarely see security walking on the grounds. Actually the only time I even see security is when they are double parked outside of Mike's Pizza on 1st avenue waiting for their pie(s).

p.s. I love dogs :) just hate the bad owners

The few people I have seen were either older women or flip flop girls smoking butts and chatting on their cell phones. so I'd look like a bully if I said anything. If I saw a guy I would say something, but LMS is right in that we are not the police and you never know how some people are going to react. Just speaking with a few of these dog owners you can tell they are not all there so I really don't want to engage them.

Once the new management is in place maybe LL can connect a few of us offline and we can all write letters asking them to address the problem.

And to follow up, the hot mess was kicking down a door with no name plate on it which means she was most likely in the wrong building. Thanks to the person who buzzed / let her in!

Well, where are the signs? NO DOGS HERE, ETC, PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOGS, ETC.

what's with the free for all? if we're not going to have security or personnel, can't we demand signage?

i pay way too much $$$$ to step in IT once a day. DISGUSTING

Oh, they let their dogs PEE on the signs, I've seen it on the First Avenue Loop too many times to count.

seconded!

The dog shit is OUT OF CONTROL today!

Admittedly, you can get some strange (read: hostile and obnoxious) reactions. I had one man go postal on me. So, yeah, we may have to pick our battles, but I still think it's worth calling people out--as politely and calmly as possible. in the absence of responsible management, we have to take it upon ourselves to keep this place at least marginally livable. And why not? Isn't that what community is about?

I'm reading all of your comments and I'm relieved to know that I'm not the only one concerned with this.

Tishman Speyer had intentionally disregarded the very rules they demanded their tenants abide by. They even made them sign binding lease riders acknowledging the rules of the property, but then instructed Security to go "hands off".

I would now urge everyone to raise this issue with Garodnick, Community Board 6, and as I said before, the Health and Sanitation Departments. We will get nowhere appealing to management, as they are still loathe to spank anyone paying $3k a month in rent, Roberts decision or not. The TA should join this effort as well.

It's a serious quality of life and health issue at this point, not to mention the incredible sociopathic behavior exhibited by the violators.

You said:

Did you not read the police blotter in T&V this week? Best yet. Luxie must be busy.

I love animals and have held off on writing much about dogs because I don't want LL to be a forum for animal hatred, but some of these dog owners are so irresponsible. I just posted a flier someone put up outside of associated. An unleashed bull dog attacked the persons dog and it had to be pried out of it's mouth. REAL nice! What if that was someone's kid? When is security going to do anything.

The building I live in used to be a shooting gallery in the '80s and the landlady isn't playing with a full deck. The junkies used to let their dogs run wild through the building and defecate everywhere. She caught one guy letting his dog go on the sidewalk and after he ignored her request to pick it up, she grabbed the turd and flung it at him. Is that what ST residents are going to have to resort to? lol

I didn't get a scan of that story. If someone scans it I'll post it.

The same thought crossed my mind too, however all it takes for a big bag of poop to be flung out of the garbage can is if it sits on top of say, a pizza box and boom! you got an airborne poop attack.

I saw a woman about two weeks ago let her (medium sized) dog drop a deuce on the walkway and she left it there!

She knew I saw her. I didn't say anything because she was already mad at the dog for stopping. I heard her say "oh c'mon not now" and pulled on his leash.

I gave her The Withering Look but didn't say anything only because I was afraid she would take it out on the dog. She had a few bags from shopping so she could certainly have fashioned something to scoop it up!

ANY ONE KNOW LINK TO COMPLAIN with

health and sanitation department nyc?

I'll tell you what I remember. The header was "Party Pooper" which I thought was clever. Security found some guy taking a crap on a roof after he set off the alarms. They found him again 30 minutes later when he went back to retrieve his marijuana? He got arrested that time. :-)

Only in NY.

.
So, this place is a toilet. Literally
.

Thanks Lois Aida for that link - we all need to use it, or call 311. The fine for not picking up poop is now $250 - they could make a fortune here!

...there are 24 officers assigned to the K-9 unit, which also monitors for dogs off the leash and related violations...The K-9 officers, who travel around the city by car, generally start out their days with a list of potential troublespots, which supervisors put together from complaints from 311 or off the city’s Web site.

http://www.amny.com/urbanite-1.812039/fewer-fines-poop-scoop-fines-for-careless-dog-owners-1.1760083

Yes! Wonderful source of income for the city. I wonder if the K-9 unit would send a couple of officers over if we fill out the form or call 311. I would love to see this.

I just filled out he form...it takes about 30 seconds...much quicker than calling. Please everyone, do it NOW.

It sounds like if there are enough complaints they will send someone to monitor.

filled out too. this place is gross

Luxie, you should sticky LoisAida's link somewhere in your reference links. At least for a while....

Wait, I DID get something called Party Pooper lol. Will find it and post so NY Mag's Daily Intel can say "We don't think people defecate on the roofs and drop pot"...sigh.

I'm so underestimated. Oh poo. (No pun intended.)

Hey--someone threw a scanner out in my building. Looks okay but no cords of course.

What ever happened to the mounted police who used to patrol this place periodically? Don't think I've seen them here since early summer.

Not that I miss them even a tiny bit. The efficacy of having mounted police patrol the grounds here seemed ridiculous. Especially when they seemingly would only wander through here long enough for their horses to dump giant mounds of poop everywhere.

They were a component of an NYPD tactical force aimed at crime in the area that was associated with local school dismissals. They were in the Oval purely for recreation and a change of scenery from their post on 14th street, they weren't patrolling here.

So they literally were here only to dump a load and leave. Nice. BTW, mounted police for crime associated with local school dismissals seems equally ridiculous.

Boo... just wondering, is it possible that you're not a native New Yorker ? I'm curious because your take on this is contrary to my understanding of the conventional wisdom.

Take on what?

I'm a native New Yorker. Years 0-8 in the Baruch Housing Projects. Plus the past 30-something years in the East Village and Stuy Town.

Interesting. Wouldn't you see the need for a police presence to control the rough element that makes up the student body we're talking about here ?. This ain't exactly the Dalton School crowd.

They lined those horses up at the corner and faced down the crowd that usually hangs out on the NW corner of 14th and 1st. I thought it was very effective, and a fine alternative to being surrounded by a gang of 16 or 17 year old street toughs.

I asked because I wondered if you understood the dangers. No offense intended.

Anon,

Yes, now that I think about it, I agree that mounted police would be effective to combat crime in those spots where middle school and high school students gather after school. I've witnessed several fights on the NW and SE (around MacDonalds) corners of 14th Street and 1st Ave. And I generally avoid spots in the City where students might be after school is let out. Even if you don't witness or become a victim of a physical fight or crime, the listening experience is often unpleasant at best ... you hear lots of offensive remarks, verbal taunting, etc.

But on the issue of mounted police in Stuy Town, I still don't see any good reason why they were here.

user-pic

Boo - the horses had to poop - why else would they come here?

Actually I think they we making sure there were no school kids hanging out on the grounds. (Or making sure the kids knew they were here so ST wasn't an option for them.)

The Dept. of Sanitation actually called me this morning to follow up on my complaint. Wanted to confirm the address. The person I spoke to is Miss Bonomo at 646-885-3769. I told her that it's a chronic problem all along the 14th Street loop...if others call her or use the form (the sooner the better), maybe they'll send someone over.

WOW fast response! Actually I am impressed that there was any response - that's great to know.

Yoof think yoof all that now? Planet of the Dogs is coming and howling.

Grrrrrr.

Our entire building now smells like dog shit. Someone's dog took a big steaming dump in the right elevator in 447 E14th and the owner did a half-assed job at cleaning it up. There's a huge chocolate smear in the elevator and the smell knocks you over when the door opens.

Eben burning incense I can smell it in my apartment.

Thanks fuckers!

Yeah we saw it when I posted it.

I thought about this because even forever residents are letting their dogs eliminate anywhere and everywhere. I was surprised. I would describe this group as The Middles. The Middles possibly having been a generation born here to The Originals. ?? Dunno.

Still, I didn't get it, thought about it and concluded this:

The Middles never lived in the real NYC and therefor are clueless about how NYC'ers of a generation ago walked their dogs; e.g. Curbed Them.

And another thing, coming from the unheralded and unpaid janitor and exterminator of my building:

Mix 1/3 white vinegar, 2/3 water, and a squirt of dish soap and dump it on the area.

Or wait for TS Mgt.
