Stuyvesant Town residents are calling out sick from work in record numbers, using the complex's possible West Nile outbreak as an excuse to take time off of work. New York City's recent bout of excessive rain coupled with the property's insistence on running their sprinklers twice daily have left most of Tishman Speyer's problematic Stuy Town drenched in water.Lawns, playgrounds, and planters are full of standing water which create a perfect storm for breeding mosquitos that carry the potentially deadly virus. Residents brave enough to lay on the muddy Oval lawn to sunbath are coming down with high fevers that frequently result in trips to the emergency room giving some an excuse to call out sick for work. "My roommate had to go to the ER after she got that awful Oval mud on her the other day," says Jasmin Jamesson, a resident of 19 Stuyvesant Oval. "I totally called out sick from work. I told them I lived in Stuy Town and they insisted I stay home. They know all about this place."
Residents have taken to Facebook and Twitter to tell others residents to use the West Nile outbreak as an excuse to get some time off of work. "Before I could even tell HR what was wrong with me they told me to stay away from the office," says Amber Ambermyer, a resident at 449 East 14th Street. "They know all about the rats, the roaches, the spiders, and bed bugs in Stuy Town from the photos I showed them on Facebook. They don't want to take the risk of me bringing any vermin or airborne viruses to work. I went to Coney Island."
When asked for comment on the West Nile virus scare, Tishman Speyer spokesman, Bud Perrone said, "Get some Deep Woods Off! and grow a pair."

I think they will try to avoid foreclosure until the Roberts case is decided.If they lose then foreclosure seems to be the only option , if TS wins perhapsthey think they can refinance. And the longshot for TS is to somehow continue chaos in Albany for 2 more years, which could mean the end to RS which sunsets in mid 2011.

Speaking only for myself I have had a few problems with my building where I called management many, many times only to leave voice mails for people who never called me back. Magically when I started taking photos and sending them here things would get taken care of literally over night.
That's been my experience.
I don't think that puddle in the photo is from kids' sprinkler at playground near Ave C loop. I take my kids quite often to that playground, but water from sprinklers will not reach THAT far.
TS has built a garage for garbage compactor underneath that playground (which they never use) and has been digging that area for no reason at all. Now, you can spot some uneven ground surface here and there, thus deep puddles a.k.a ideal egg-laying ground for mosquitoes.
Take a nice walk along Ave C between 14th and 18th after rainfall, you will see several curbside "lakes", since water drains are just simply clogged around there. Some are over 4-5 inches deep, seriously. I am not surprised to hear West Nile Virus is going around in Stuy Town. This summer I will spray bug-offs on my kids just to be safe.
I took it by a kiddie park on an area that overlooks 14th Street between B & C.
Smart thinking. And besides Bug-Off, better stock-up on some antibiotics, as well. Lyme Disease has been spreading rapidly through Stuy Town. Many people aren't aware that deer ticks were inadvertently brought in with the many unusual trees and exotic plants that TS bought at a discount rate from third world countries. I'm recovering from a nasty bout of it myself!

I don't know about them being TS plants, but I do know that they have really spoiled this formerly humorous blog with their self-indulgent ganging up on others and lobbing horrible insults around at other posters. I used to send this link to people who asked me about life in Stuyvesant Town (a co-worker just asked me if Stuyvesant Town apartments are really as nice as they look in AM magazine), but now I don't because I don't think they would appreciate the kind of language and "humor" that these two women (or men) have been peppering the site with. I just tell people that the ads for Stuyvesant Town are photoshopped and that the apartments are not worth the money they are going for. A lot of people don't realize that Stuyvesant Town has gone down so much. They think it's the way it was when the old Met Life used to own it. I wish that were the case.
I wouldn't go that far. The comments on the New York Post are disgusting but it doesn't stop me from reading it and it doesn't stop me from sending links to my friends. They don't need me thinking for them. They can make up their own minds.

RR and I go back a long way. He thinks the TA walks on water , I think something markedly different . He is right about one thing. I with several others tried to organize a group separate from the TA and after several months we realized that the apathy of virtually all STPCV tenants was impossible to overcome, particularly when , unlike the TA, we charged no dues and received no financial aid from the local politicians. Some of us(including me ) expended a lot of time and some of our own money to try to organize and motivate the tenants.
I still believe that the TA leadership ,while well-meaning, suffers from the problems that all entrenched beauracracies suffer from.
There are many unresolved and , in some cases, growing issues in our community which are simply not being addressed by the TA
A collective response to issues is usually far better than a bunch of individual responses , but unfortunately very few tenants want to get involved with a collective response.
Hopefully, Lux will recognize that Beulah is posting as Miserable in Sty Town and will do something about it.

Quick question/opinion(s) needed: my job has just offered to relocate me to its headquarters in Chicago. I'm in the middle of my term here at the wonderful fiefdom of Stuy Town but I'm sure no one will want to take over my $3500 lease when they are starting new ones at $2300 with 2 months free.

One of my neighbors is moving out of the country for one year. His current lease is over Aug 31. TS refused to let him out of lease unless he agreed to waive certain rights, including any rights if tenants win the Roberts case. He refused the deal.
They will likely come after you and at the very least they will mess up your credit report if you stop paying.
As for the economics of your decision -you can figure out which is better- maybe you can sublease (even at a lower rate ) to recoup some of the rent you would pay TS.
By the way, in the midst of all this my neighbor just received his renewal lease and TS proposed a $600 per month increase. I guess TS figures if someone has been living on Mars for the past year they will sign this type of increase in a market where MR apartment rents are dropping considerably.

I know someone who was sued for unpaid rent and when the case was settled , TS gave the tenant the same size apartment in ST at a LOWER RENT.NO intelligent landlord would do that
