After months of advertising a "dedicated outdoor areas for dogs" on their website as an amenity, Stuyvesant Town cancels their plans to open a dog run on the property. Their website now reads "pets are always welcome." The Tishman Speyer regime lifted the Stuy Town dog ban earlier this year hoping the pet friendly policy would increase their dwindling occupancy rate and make some quick cash. Residents must register their dogs with management and pay a one-time fee of $250.Of course the decision to cancel the dog run only adds to the friction between pro-dog and anti-dog residents in the complex. Aside from allowing dogs to get exercise it would have cut down on the brown that some irresponsible dog owners leave behind. But hey, these classy signs should help.

Residents who wish to have the dog run built can sign this online petition.

That sucks. It would have been nice to have something local where you could meet other neighbors with dogs. Guess I'll have to brave Tompkins Square Park and the one-legged junkies.
Oh God, here we go again.
There's a NYC Park located right adjacent to ST/PCV, it's called RIVERWALK. Why not petition the City to put a dog run in a small section there ? It would be on the other side of the FDR, would have zero noise impact on the buildings, and is very convenient.
I would object to a dog run underneath my window, and I think many other people would too. The issue of people being able to enjoy the peace and comfort of their own homes takes priority over the minority who wish to own an animal.
If they close the park at a reasonable hour there shouldn't be a problem with the noise...as if you could hear a dog over the leaf blowers, dumpsters, construction equipment, etc.
Once again, the self serving logic of the dog owners comes forth. The object is to GET RID OF THE NOISE, not to make more. The construction etc. will come and go, but a dog run is forever. How can you judge what is a fair place to locate a dog run. How can you impose your animal's barking at 7AM under those people's windows, EVERY DAY ?
Run the dog up and down your apartment hallway, or find someplace to do it where it doesn't bother everyone else. People pay good money to live here and shouldn't be subjected to the whims of a few.
NEXT !!
It's not as if dog-owners don't have other options such as Tompkins Park or Stuyvesant Square park. Where do you think other apt. dwellers go. And while Tishman may have tried to attract tenants with their promise of a dedicated area for dogs, they actually then thought about it -- as opposed to their usual rush and ill-advised decision making -- and realize it would not be such a good idea after all. As it is the acoustics in this complex are so bad that from my upper floor apartment I can hear every word of the conversation of people walking by.
There was a logic behind the banning of dogs by MetLife for all those years. There are lots of people, especially kids, living here in close proximity. Now that everyone can use the lawns however they wish to, everyone can come into contact with doggie waste, and whatever it contains. Kids who regularly run on the lawns could get hookworms. Eeewwww. While dogs are not supposed to be in the Oval or on the lawns, they are. My sister was disgusted at the Farmers Market when dogs were all over the goods being sold, with impunity. People apparently don't understand what it means to "Curb Your Dog" in New York City, ie, Fido must poop and pee at the curb, not just anywhere on the street or within the complex, even if the owner scoops it. And the doggies do bark...during their late night walks or in the early morning, especially. I don't blame them; they are dogs after all. I would have loved to have a dog all these years, but good apartment living citizenship dictated against it.
I for one like seeing the dogs in the neighborhood, the annoying kids on their scooters whipping by me, not so much.
Back when the weather was nice I counted a total of 4 dogs lounging on the oval lawn with their sunbathing owners. Two security guards walked by and did nothing. Last month I saw a dog owner letting her dog run around off-leash on a grassy area where kids were playing. Security drove by, but did nothing. Then there's the whole pooping/peeing on the grass issue, which I've seen more old ladies scolding owners about than actual security guards.
I think dogs being allowed here is great, I really do - but in order for it to happen peacefully - so that all residents can be satisfied - the rules need to be enforced. Management can post giant signs all over the place advertising their "Juicy" "Sweet" Farmers Market and new Fios deals, but for some reason can't post udpated signs with the dog rules, or get security to actually monitor those rules. Until all this happens, there won't be support from non-dog owners for a dog run, or any other pet amenities, only continued anger at the current state of their community.
I agree David. If there are rules to where the dogs are / are not allowed, they should be posted somewhere and enforced so people can be made aware of the rules they may not know they are breaking.
I have a friend in ST who has a dog and he doesn't let the dog go on the grass at all and he always picks up after it. Not every dog owner is irresponsible, just as not every rent stabilized tenant is cheating the system or every market rate tenant is discourteous.
I think Beaulette's rottweilers are are adorable ;)
Why, thank you Luxie darlin'! If I say so myself, Beulette has those rotties beautifully trained. They wouldn't dream of doing their dumps anywhere other than in the doorway of the Leasing Office on First Avenue. Of course, Beulette is not very good with the poopy scooper. Always "forgets" she says. Poor excuse in my opinion, but those rotties do give the parked golf carts and Security SUVs a good hosing every time they pass one. They're so delightfully playful too. Their favorite game is to chase delivery guys on bicycles and leap on their backs and topple them. They're so good at that game and most of the delivery guys are so good natured about it because after they go sprawling, they jump up, grab their bikes and speed away and leave behind whole, untouched containers of hot pizza, Chinese chow, hamburgers and fries all kinds of comestibles. It is so kind of them and the dogs just love to chow down, bless them. Of course, the delivery guys often leave behind whole pants legs too because the rotties are a little boisterous when they're playing, but so long as there's not too much blood spilled or any limbs severed I don't think anybody minds too much.

When did TS ever say specifically they were going to put in a dog run? The phrase "dedicated areas for dogs" probably was intentionally crafted to be vague.
The title Stuyvesant Town Cancels Planned Dog Run is misleading because TS never had any real plans for a "dog run".

Devdog, that the TishSpy way - all smoke and mirrors!
Since clearly many of you do not have dogs and chances are you are NOT paying market rate. It would make much more sense to have a dog run in a more remote spot, where dog people can be with dog people and the others don't have to be near them. Anyways the only time people would be really using a dog run is after work, when you are all home anyways. I am pretty sure that the rowdy college kids, the many families who have small loud children or SCREAMING PARENTS provide much more noise than that one dog that barks while he is playing. At 7am people want to get their dog to do their "business" and then get off to work, sorry guys.
