Is Con Edison to Blame for Brown Water

Is Con Edison to blame for Stuyvesant Town's brown water woes?Stuyvesant Town residents living near the corner of 14th Street and Avenue A have been subjected to noise from a Con Edison construction project for months. Back in September a security officer told a tenant the project was already two weeks behind schedule and from the looks of this photo taken by a Sty Spy, it will continue for a few more weeks at the very least.

Management has had minimal contact with the tenants, keeping them in the dark as to what the problem is and when they estimate the construction project will be complete. Residents living on the 14th Street Loop have had to find alternate parking on the already crowded city streets for months and have been harassed by security when scheduled deliveries need to be made.

Stuyvesant Town's tenants suspect this Con Edison construction project might have something to do with the brown water that is rapidly spreading through the complex. Tishman Speyer continues to pamphlet the property, encouraging residents to sign up for a new website that would allow them to get information on such construction projects. Surprising to no one, there is no information on the site about the 14th Street Loop construction project.

Well. This was most peculiar. Yesterday, per usual, Mother was enjoying a nice tumbler of Hearty Burgundy while watching One Life To Live on the Philco. Right after David got Spencer to admit Asa is Spencer's father, Mother loudly blurted out, "Document the atrocities...videotape the brown water...the dumpsters...put it all up on YouTube...title them Stuyvesant Town: Brown water or Stuyvesant Town: dumpsters for the Google." She only quieted down again after Blair became upset upon hearing Todd tell Evangeline he and Blair aren't together.

I don't know what to make of it, but I thought I should pass it on.

The ConEd project is a Steam Pipe Upgrade project. They've installed some new pipe, done some asbestos abatement and "waterproofed" some of the installation (whatever that means). That area at 14th and A has been a problem for ConEd for a while. There have been some leaks or something that they've had a hard time tracking down. They dug up the area several times in the past year or so. I suspect all this work is being done to replace the whole mess.

I actually welcome the project. I'd prefer to see the steam mains kept in great shape. We all saw what happened when the one on Lex blew up. Man, that was brutal for the people that were injured or killed.

I don't think ConEd has anything to do with water main work at all. I think it's all handled by the DEP and their contractors. I think part of the brown water problem is because the DEP has stuff going on elsewhere and it's affecting us. That said, it seems like the 14th Street buildings have had much worse brown water problems than the rest of the complex, and for quite a long time too.

LOL ! That explains a lot Edna. Thanks !!

Rumor has it, they are looking for Jimmy Hoffa.

BTW, looks like the Steam Pipe project is complete. ConEd is pouring concrete into the roadbed and sidewalk today, so I guess they're wrapping it up.

This has nothing to do with the horrendous brown water--a serious health and safety issue. It has everything to do with our irrelevant Oval Amenities. The Oval Lounge "Sunday Brunches" are chock full of screaming toddlers and babies running about; adults piling their plates with food and then throwing half of it away or allowing their children to play with it. All food is gone by noon. There is much toddler and parent screaming and very loud music. But the real crowd pleaser was a young mother changing her baby's very dirty nappy right on the floor in the middle of everyone...while we were trying to talk, wishing we could find half a left over bagel, and bored by the childrens' cartoon on the large screen TV. And this is why I paid $250 initiation fee and $40 a month. Yes, I'm one of those born every minute. Can I have my $ back.

Well then... looks like those "Amenities" aren't such a great idea then.

I would have checked them out before I chucked up $250 + + +, but hey...

I'm just waiting for the DHCR to rule that the patios are a reduction in services and that they either have to open them to everyone or rebate my rent.

Until that happens, there can be a billion "dirty nappies" in the Lounge... as far as I'm concerned.

Brown water problem has now appeared in PCV. Hope it has nothing to do with those "dirty nappies"

The brown water has been in PCV for awhile... at least two to three weeks.

Today, however, it was worse than it's ever been. I filled my tub up to see how dirty the water was... and it was a deep, dark brown! Previously it was just noticeably discolored. It also left considerable scum when I drained the tub.

And the water from my kitchen sink faucet ran noticeably brown for a the first time. That lasted for the better part of a minute. Then it ran clear.

Brown water has been on the menu here for decades. Not to be redundant...
