Judging by an email we received this morning, it looks as though Stuyvesant Town residents will have to continue
beating their laundry on rocks at Stuyvesant Cove:
"I live in 451 E. 14th St and every time I go to do laundry 3-4 washing machines are broken. They told us the new card machines would take credit cards--they do not. They only take cash. The management sucks and won't do anything about these machines.
I called Mac Gray today to tell them how many were broken and they acted like it was new news--they said there was no report of any broken machines. WTF? One of those machines has been broken for 4 weeks! Please write up about our horrible 'new' machines and encourage all of your readers to call 1.800.MacGray"
Laundry - New Washers and Dryers are Bad News [STPCV Tenants Association]
The machines rose from the ashes of the nuclear fire. Their war to exterminate mankind had raged for decades, but the final battle would not be fought in the future. It would be fought here, in our present. Tonight...
We have been sent here from the future to terminate your laundry.
I have no problems with the washing machines in my building but then again I am the only one living in it.
Actually, the Mac Gray rep may have been telling the truth. You have to call to report a machine not working. Management and TS maintenance staff do not do this. Also, the people who come to empty the cash out of the card machine do not report it. You MUST call the 800 number if you want them to fix a machine.
How can TS claim to manage the buildings when they clearly don't? Maybe they should spend less time sending electronic ransom notes about their awful ice cubes and more time taking care of the place.
the college children are probably using them to mix large batches of margaritas.
I am still confused trying to figure out how less capacity and less cleaning power (with the resulting dirty, sudsy clothes) can be perceived as an improvement. I think I'll start doing my laundry in the kitchen sink. Oh, wait, I can't--the water is brown and the drain is perpetually clogged.
Well, one way to avoid the icky sticky residue in your clothing is to pour a lot of extra water into the machine when it gets onto the wash cycle. We filter the brown out and bring down an extra gallon or more jug of filtered water for each machine to add to the itty bit of water that the new high-tech, high-efficiency MacGray machines provide. It's very annoying to have to do this but at least our clothes seem to be mostly sans residue.
The answer is -- and has been for a long time -- Wash N Clean on 14.
Mac Grey? They should have known better than to buy washers and dryers from Apple Computers. Do these machines allow us to send e-mails and surf the internet while we're waiting for our clothes to dry?
Girl,
No, but apparently in some buildings, you can go on line and see which machines are available and where yours is in the wash cycle.
That Steve Jobs! What won't he think of next?
If I didn't have osteoporosis before, I do now. Why are the openings for the washers and dryers so low to the ground??? Digging clams is more comfortable. I have to order some Boniva.
PS
Why is it so difficult for these self absorbed college girls to get their skankwear out of the washing machines in a reasonable amount of time? Doesn't their iphone or imac or icrackberry have an alarm that sounds when their sweatpants and college jerseys are done? Fuck Michigan!
One of the machines in my building was unplugged and tipped over. I guess we're not the only ones having problems.
Perhaps the Tishman Speyer boys are planning to open Oval Laundromat after they dismantle the fountain. For $250 a year and $20.00 a month, one can do one's laundry the "luxury" way.
I went down to wash a load last night and found 2 soggy Cheerios and a long dark hair sitting in a puddle of water inside the lip of the rubber flap between the washing tub & the door. Blech! After scooping out the remnants I ran my clothes and towels through the wash cycle only to find very heavy wet towels & jeans mixed in with a cotton tee shirt that still had dry spots on it having never even been touched by water! Needless to say I had to spend two plus hours in dryer time just to get the towels mostly dry!
Hrumph!
The "new" laundry rooms are a disaster to be sure. Here's my plug for "Wash N Clean" on 14th Street. They are courteous, efficient, will do your laundry for you for what usually turns out to be less $$ than DIY in Stuy Town. That's because they charge by the pound and if it turns out that additional dryer cycles are necessary, you don't get another charge for that. After using them several times for full serve, the staff doesn't even have to ask me for my i.d. info any more; they remember me. Old fashioned service at its best.
