Resident Attacked at 8 Stuyvesant Oval

I think that I might pay Manny to walk me! Between this assault, the pot smokers blocking the entry way, the muddy Oval, the barricades, etc., it's pretty unsafe and virtually impossible to navigate your way around here.

My first thought, of course, is to wish the victim of this crime my best wishes and hope that the thug was scared away so that any harm to this individual was minimalized. My second thought is that it is obvious that we are entering a phase here at stuy town where management's incompetence and cutbacks are no longer simply causing just a degradation in the quality of the grounds (i.e. dog feces &urine, horrible grounds keeping, litter all over the place etc.), but a danger to our lives. Is there any reason why there isn't at least one security guard on every loop and one on the oval during the overnight hours? Personally, I believe that should be the case 24-7 but certainly over night. Of course, since Tishman Spyer is so incompetent, they've run this place into the ground and are losing money hand over fist. This has led to a reduction in staffing for security. Having said that, can't the tenant's association make a case for a reduction in services and actually demonstate the deleterious effects of these reductions by citing cases such as this? These sleazy scumbags make me angrier by the day.

Was through the Oval last night and there was NO security. Still a lot of lights out. Huge dark spots near the rape forest. Rent drop box / hut with nobody inside. Kids skateboarding off the Ave A loop, making a video, nearly KILLED an old lady who didn't see him sliding down a railing towards her. WTF? I have nothing against skateboarding but this isn't a skate park. No security anywhere, and the ones I do see once in a blue moon are so fucking fat they can barely lift a greasy sandwich (they manage) let alone chase someone.

Incredible that those lights are still out. There was so much noise and chaotic energy in the Oval last night, even way past 3:00 AM.

I should add: Incredible that those lights are still out EVEN AFTER A TENANT WAS ASSAULTED AT 8 OVAL!!!! That alone should be grounds for a massive rent strike. Beyond disgusting.

If things continue to degrade (quality of life, criminal activity, serious maintenance issues, etc.) the community will reach a "tipping point."

Life will become undesirable enough that further concessions in market rents will be necessary and management will have to reach further down the desirability spectrum for prospective tenants.

Once that cycle takes hold, it will likely be irreversible until even the most conservative financial circumstances make the project unworkable.

It is possible that the failure of TS will precipitate the ability and cash flow to effect change. Once half of the debt is effectively wiped out through default, a new owner will be able to afford necessary maintenance and will not have to stretch quite as much to fill apartments with more desirable (read: mature) tenants.

At this point, it is only a possibility, though, and I wouldn't bank on it. The place may really have to fall into ruin before making a phoenix-like rebirth. Unfortunately, that would take a generation.

Anybody know what actally happened? Anything?

And last night was especially wild. The frat traffic through my building has grown exponentially over the years with this year now completely intolerable. Christ, they even left the entrance door hooked wide open--the one that locks! It was around 2 a.m. I had security close it, not becase it wasn't an easy thing for me to do but these are security issues.

I came this . close to punching one kid out last night.

"Come on," he said, "weren't you 22 years old once?" Stupidly, I attempted a dialogue with someone who won't even remember it in the morning. "Sure. And I hung out in all the clubs you've only read about on Wikipedia, but I didn't walk around the streets hollering into people's windows." "Sure you did," he argued.

What is needed here is a police presence. The 13th is just across the street.

And another thing.

Were there two robberies in two days at 8 or did the T&V blotter get the date wrong?

The victim was lucky to get help, if in fact she raised a commotion. Another reason for the frats to stop screaming their ways through the complex. The neighbors could've shrugged and reached for their ear plugs, again.

You are right--if I hear screaming, I generally ignore it, unless if someone is screaming "help".
Sounds like the victim is okay--hurray to her neighbors for responding.

What a moron--no wonder he's still in college at 22. Geez--I graduated when I was 20.

There is one of those useless blue light, emergency call box with security camera right where the mugging took place.

Maybe if the mugger saw the camera he would of walked away.

Me too. :-)

Everybody knows those, the cameras, and the vestibule intercoms don't work. Remember the "Stuy Town Mugger?" There are thugs that are very stupid and there are thugs who read the papers. And there are the supreme thugs who read the financial papers. ;-)

It's Saturday. Think I'll sleep tonight? You'll know if I'm even more ornery tomorrow.

I thought the blue light button was where you got super-sized.

ROFLMAO! I'm going to stay away from it then!

LOL Me too! I suppose that could benefit some people though! :) As far as I know, the only things that are super-sized are rents, rodents and reduction of services.
(But did it work, 447?)

I didn't have any hand sanitizer with me so I didn't touch it. My other concern was that if I pressed the button the pole would tip over.
