ABC covered it with some images of the suspect:

Those lobby cameras work great, don't they ?
The sad fact is that seniors make the easiest targets and ST-PCV is full of them. Any afternoon, muggers can see them piling in and out of Associated.
In the meantime, it would be in everybody's best interests to be aware of who is behind them before they enter their buildings. If you don't know the person, don't go in with strangers. Walk back out to the street and take the other entrance in.
I hope Security and the 13th Precinct is working on a plan of action. Things aren't gonna get any better until either the economy improves or it gets re-established that committing acts like this in ST-PCV is risky. The latter will be much harder now than it might have been had this begun happening, say 10 years ago, thanks to T-S has turned is now reaping the not-rewards of high turnover in these apts. Nobody knows who they're neighbors are any more and that makes us an even riper target.
I was in the middle of editing the end of that last paragraph and...the comments submit themselves now!
In reading the description of the mugger it is intersting that one key characteristic is not mentioned in the report ie ,his race. Obviously the video reveals that but why is ABC News so PC that it can describe the sex, age ,height ,weight and lack of hair of the suspect but not his race? What if there was no video?
The race of asuspect , whether white, black, hispanic, oriental or Martian is a key part of his description and should be always included by the media.
I've noticed that too, Ziggy! Most of the news channels, including NY1, will state the gender, approximate weight, height and age and maybe even some description of the clothing, but will not mention whether he/she was black, white, hispanic, asian or whatever. Personally, I think most of the crimes are committed by the whatevers. ;-)
I think Luxie has programed it so that if you are taking too long writing something, the program just says: "Oh, get on with it; that'll do!" ;-)
This actually is the result of complaints by certain minority activists a number of years ago that describing the race of a suspect was somehow discriminatory or racial profiling. Many years ago all media outlets included the race of the suspect in their descriptions.
Since one of these attacks occurred in PCV where I live, it would be nice to have as complete a description of the suspect as possible.
When I upgraded the site last Christmas something shifty happened to the database. I am going to try and work on it this weekend. When I post a story and when people comment, there is a 10-15 second lag time before it goes live. I think there are other bugs too with the sign up process as I am seeing people registering the same name two, three times.
I'll talk to my programmer about it. Sorry for the annoyance.
The man from 440 E 23 said he actually held the door open for the mugger. That shows how complacent we've become. In the past--the bad old '70s--we would have been more circumspect. When I enter my building I don't proceed to the mailbox or to the elevator until I've pushed the front door closed. Otherwise there's plenty of time for someone to come in before you get to the elevator. It's time to start thinking defensively again, for those who've stopped. If someone comes in behind you whom you don't know, don't get in the elevator with that person. And don't be afraid to challenge someone you don't recognize or outright refuse to let that person in.
I just watched the video, and it does mention that he's black.
The video does, but the text below the video leaves out that particular information.
The online Daily News report gives no description at all, except calling the guy a "200-pound punk"!
Having the victim actually open the door for his mugger reminds me of a case in Stuy Town several years ago where the same thing happened. The victim in that case wasn't going to initially hold open the door, but the robber (a black male) made the victim feel guilty by using the race card and, once in, mugged the guy in the elevator.
Several years ago I was called all kinds of names by a couple of black guys because I wouldn't let them in (I was going to my mailbox). They said they didn't know the intercom number, etc., but they were visiting a neighbor. I went to the neighbor (who was also black) and asked if they knew they had visitors down in the vestibule. They said they were not expecting anyone. I've refused to let white people in if I didn't know them and whatever they call me they can call me. People mouthing off at me don't intimidate me, but I can see how some folks would be fazed. Mind you, I'm equipped to deal with certain stuff, whereas most people aren't.
Are you packing heat or Rotties? ;)
No comment. ;-)
One of the victims described his mugger to me as a black man with what sounded like a Jamaican or Haitian accent.
One night a few years ago before the video intercoms I had a guy call up to my apartment late at night asking to be let in because he forgot his keys. I asked him what floor he lives on and he said 13. I told him there is no 13th floor and told him I was calling security.
It doesn't matter if people are black or white, if that little voice inside you says something isn't right there most likely isn't. It has nothing to do with skin color, it has to do with the way a person is behaving, their body language, their eyes, the situation you're in.
I'd rather offend someone then get stabbed.
The question no one ever seems to ask is why the quality is so poor on video surveillance cameras. I've taken better pictures with my cell phone. The technology undoubtedly exists for cameras that can take better pictures and adjust to changing light levels.
Right on!
Let's just say he'd have a clearer understanding of the words "pain" and "surprise" than he ever thought he'd have.
Sieg Heil!
Go to hell.
Girl, is this you? ;)

Yes.
Personally, I wouldn't dream of taking a stroll through Stuy Town without my Tampon Taser Gun:

I am totally opposed to Taser Guns. Would never use one. Having a Black Belt in Karate comes in useful in dire circumstances.
You'll notice the numbers 447 tattooed on my arm by the management office the day I moved in.
447 HELL......I'm surprised that you haven't joined the rest of us who finally said fuck you to management, and had our address tattoos removed! The only drawback is when management discovers a tenant's tattoo is gone during shower check, and makes them clean up the NYU students' vomit in the Oval as a punishment. But just put masking tape over your shower head (where their video cameras are installed) and wear long sleeves during the summer to avoid getting caught!
My cousin videotaped her numbers (645) being removed from her arm:

I have a low threshold for pain. I think I hear security outside. I have to get behind my bookcase!
