Tenants of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village will continue to debate whether or not yesterday's ST/PCV Tenant's Association meeting was productive, either way we did get realistic numbers concerning Tishman Speyer's crusade to evict legal, rent stabilized tenants. According to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Tishman Speyer was found by the courts to have made false claims in 339 cases though in all fairness they did manage to find 2 whole people abusing the system."State Senator Tom Duane, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, Council member Dan Garodnick, Congressmember Carolyn Maloney and other officials today announced legislation they will be introducing requiring landlords to pay attorney's fees and/or expenses incurred by tenants wrongly accused of breaking rent-stabilization regulations. In cases where a landlord if found to have knowingly served a notice containing facts or allegations that are not true, the landlord shall be liable for three times the tenant's legal fees."

OMG! That has to be a depiction of the StuyTown Tenants meeting. Folks are fainting and swooning from having to wait for an hour or so for the pols to stop dealing with the cameras and take their seats. Is it just me or are others questioning why all these pols' good intentions on behalf of tenants have never come to fruition? Surely, they vote for things that their leadership wants. Why can't they make deals or put together coalitions that would serve to protect rent-stabilized tenants in all of NYC who are affected by this unparalleled greed? Don't they talk to their colleagues in other boroughs whose constituents are facing the same greedy eviction schemes? What ever happened to indexing incomes and the $2K rent for inflation? As I recall, the destabilization law was passed in 1997 and those levels reflect what were market rates at the time, not now. All of our Dem office holders will really be in trouble when their natural constituency no longer can afford to live in Manhattan. By then, the Bloombucks will have taken over and they will be out of their jobs forthwith. Ugh. Maybe it is time to leave.

Rob Speyer makes my Beulette look like a Rhodes Scholar and she didn't even finish 9th Grade. She sure knows how to look after her money though. She sits (sometimes lies) and watches Suze Orman on tv and takes copious notes. I just wish she'd tell me a bit more about her accounts in the Caymens. In terms of indexing rents for inflation, the goal is to get it from the current $175,000 to over $300,000. The goal is also to raise the $2000 ceiling, but I'm not sure what they want to raise it to. Unless we get a democratic majority in the Senate in the upcoming elections, this stuff will never get passed.
