Oval Lounge: Open and Waiting for Interest

Oval Lounge remains empty after a violent fight broke out at a private party hosted by Tishman Speyer.

Just five days after Tishman Speyer christened Stuyvesant Town's Oval Lounge with a private party the ended with a bloody and violent attack, Oval Lounge is now open to its Oval Amenities / Essentials members. Did you hear that? It's OPEN! You can go in now. What? No, you will not be attacked by beer bottle wielding brokers. Wherever did you get an idea like that?

It looks so cold and bleak! Absolutely NOTHING inviting about it. Has all the appeal of putting on damp sneakers on a cold day.

Maybe if they finished these futuristic prison cells on time, weather would permit people to sit outside.

Please help us through the credit crises. We are losing money fast and no one will join our silly essentials. C'mon they are ESSENTIAL!

I heard, second hand, that a resident inquired about renting Oval Lounge for a party and was told they aren't taking bookings until the New Year. However, they were told that they would have to use one of the two approved caterers, Bruno's or Ess A Bagel and that alcohol wasn't allowed. With those conditions, I'm amazed they aren't already booked through 2012.

Oval lounge would then be a good place to hold birthday parties for kids. I'm sure there"s big money in that.

If you look closely, these oval spaces masquerading as amenities are actually a diminuation of services for tenants. From what I've observed, there is no longer any recreation department, and the kids who watched the playgrounds are now employees of American Leisure.

In the Oval, we've lost the bathrooms, the water fountain, an emergency call box, a rent drop box, and a security office. The security office and bathrooms were replaced only by temporary structures. What happens when the kids playing need water? Are they expected to suffer heat stroke? When this happens, how will the kids call for help, and who is left from security to assist?

It gets even worse when it comes to loss of services for residents. For years there was a free daytime play-group for preschool kids which the Recreation Office offered in the Spring and the Fall. Nothing fancy, just a guy with a guitar leading some sing-alongs and story times out by the basketball courts. Well now that I have a 2-year old this would appeal to me. However when I called the Rec office to ask when their free playgroup would be starting up again this Fall, they said it was no longer being offered and that Oval Kids had taken over all their pre-school activities. Meaning what was once free to residents will now come at a price, if it is even offered at all.

I stopped calling about these spaces because they wanted my name an address before they would answer a basic question. From what I read in an earlier post they don't have websites set up for the spaces to provide info. Frustrating.

The oversized white poles take up a lot of space inside. They're so awkward looking.

Alex, I couldn't agree with you more. When you call them with a question they ask too many questions before they answer your question. I feel like I am being interrogated. I also get the feeling that they are blatantly lying or just don't have answers so they make stuff up. And why DON'T they have any information online? The regular Stuy Town site tells you nothing.

I mean, is it true that we can only use Bruno and Ess a Bagel for catering? That sounds ridiculous to me but then again, I though the reports about Tishman Speyer's bar room brawl in Oval Lounge was a joke until I read it on Curbed. They run this place so poorly that you can't differentiate fact from fiction and they don't provide anything in writing. I'm over Oval.

Well, if it were not for those oversized white poles, it's likely that the buildings might collapse. There are many reasons why living above the Evil Amenities is both edgy and likely to be a continuing sources of annoyance.

So wait, I can pay $250 to join, plus $20 per month, plus whatever the fee is to rent Oval Lounge for a party, so that I can serve bagels and no alcohol? Umm, maybe I should just take the $490 plus rental fee and take my friends to a local restaurant where we can eat and drink whatever we want and not be stared at through floor-to-ceiling windows.
